Minor


Through the Department of Health Sciences, Thomas More offers a minor in public health.  The public health minor provides students with an introduction to the key areas of public health including health promotion, biostatistics, epidemiology, environmental health, and global health. Additionally, students have the opportunity to individualize their minor by taking elective hours from specific public health areas. The public health minor will provide a path to prepare interested students for a graduate career in public health.  Additionally, the minor complements a variety of majors by offering insights into how public health concepts can be applied across different disciplines such as business, biology, political science, exercise science and more, preparing students for diverse careers in healthcare, policy, research, and community health initiatives.

All students minoring in public health will take an introductory public course, a data analytics course, epidemiology, and global health.  Students will then tailor their minor to meet their Individualized career goals by choosing 6 credit hours of elective coursework focusing on environmental health, health informatics, healthcare management, biomedical ethics, behavioral health, and community health.

The public health minor incorporates courses from a variety of fields. Students will be learning from faculty who are experts in epidemiology, environmental health, psychology, biology, sociology, medical ethics, health policy and healthcare informatics.

Public health graduates can work in a variety of settings, reflecting the broad nature of the field.
  • Students interested in a career in healthcare management or leadership would benefit from pairing a minor in public health with a major in business administration, healthcare management, or ethical leadership.
  •  A public health minor will help prepare students majoring in exercise science and exercise and health strategies to enter the field of health and wellness promotion.
  • Those students majoring in biochemistry, biology, chemistry, environmental science, or life sciences and minoring in public health will be equipped for environmental health careers.
  • Students interested in the field of health behavior and health communication will find that the public health minor paired with a major in psychology, sociology, education, or communications provides enhanced job marketability and skills.
