BES/AES In Sociology

The Bachelor of Elected Studies and Associates of Elected Studies allows adult students to individualize their program. The BES requires the completion of 128 credit hours, the AES requires the completion of 64 credit hours. Students may choose to get their major degree or associates degree in Sociology, or students may work with an advisor and create a program that fits their individualized needs by emphasizing Sociology.

Core Requirements

  • ENG150
  • ENG 200 or higher
  • One Social Science (ECO105, POS105, PSY105 or SOC105)
  • One Mathematics (MAT121 or higher)
  • World Civilizations (HIS101 and HIS102)
  • One Communication (COM105, 205, 207 or 305)
  • One Theology (THE201,205,207, 218,219, 305,306,309,317,405, 406 or 425)
  • One Philosophy (any course except PHI105)
  • One Natural Science (lab optional)
  • One Fine Arts

Sociology Requirements

  • SOC 105 - Intro. to Sociology
  • SOC 206 - Community Service
  • SOC 301 - Contemporary Theories
  • SOC 311 - Social Research Methods
  • SOC 405 - Social Change
  • SOC 409 - Senior Thesis
  • 18 hours of Sociology electives
  • Supporting Courses: PSY 201 - Statistics for Social Sciences;
  • Electives (6 hours) chosen from ECO, HIS, POS, or PSY offerings;
  • Computer Literacy: CIS111 or equivalent

Associate Of Elected Studies In Sociology

Core Requirements

  • ENG150
  • One Social Science (ECO105, POS105, PSY105 or SOC105)
  • One Mathematics (MAT121 or higher)
  • World Civilizations (HIS101 and HIS102)
  • One Communication (COM105, 205, 207 or 305)

Sociology Requirements

  • Sociology (18 hours total): SOC 105, 206, 301, plus 9 hours of Sociology departmental electives;
    • Supporting Courses (6 hours total): PSY 105; 3 hours from ECO, HIS, POS, or PSY

If students choose to emphasize Sociology, they take the core requirements for the BES or AES and then choose the courses, with the guidance of their advisor, they would like to take to make up their required credit hours.
