Education Department Mission
The Education Department of Thomas More College carries out the mission of the College by preparing individuals for the teaching profession and related educational endeavors. Faculty members of the Education Department strive to provide learning environments in which individuals can demonstrate the knowledge, dispositions, and skills required to facilitate learning for all students in a diverse and global society.
The M.Ed. Program Mission
The mission of the M.Ed. Teacher Leader program in Education is to prepare in-service teachers for leadership roles and related educational endeavors by providing learning environments in which they can develop the knowledge, dispositions, values and skills required to help all students learn.
The Teacher as a Leader
The program is designed with busy teachers in mind: hybrid classes, job embedded projects, and flexible scheduling. The program bridges classroom experiences with professional learning communities, teacher leadership, and 21st century skills for all candidates. Additionally, the program works to engage, enhance, and execute leadership qualities in the classroom outlined in the Kentucky Teacher Standards. Key to the program is access to 21st century learning opportunities and the active incorporation of real-world experiences to increase student learning for K-12 students in the teacher's classroom. By focusing on implementing these concepts in both the teaching and learning of candidates, the roots of teacher leadership are established.

The Capstone project is the culminating research project for the M.Ed. program. This exit requirement asks Teacher Leader Candidates to synthesize their graduate school knowledge with classroom experiences. The Capstone research project begins after completion of the core Teacher Leadership courses and is completed with the guidance and mentoring of a Capstone Project Committee. The Teacher Leader Candidate will design, implement, and analyze an action-research project to meet a real-world need in their classroom, school, or district. This praxis--the merging of theory and practice in real life-- provides the Teacher Leader Candidate with the skills necessary to lead educational change in the 21st century.
