President and Chief Executive Officer, Thomas More College
David A. Armstrong, J.D. became the 14th president of Thomas More College in July 2013. Driven by excellence, he has led the institution through a transformation that includes the introduction of new academic programs, and co-curricular and extra-curricular initiatives. Under his leadership, the College has embarked upon a growth initiative resulting in consistent student body growth for each enrollment period since his arrival. In the 2014-2015 academic year, the College welcomed one of the largest classes of incoming students ever and the greatest number of students living in the residence halls.
Armstrong has partnered with faculty and staff to forge new opportunities for Thomas More College which has resulted in increased media recognition and a surge in community partnerships for the College. The College announced a partnership with St. Elizabeth Healthcare which enhances the new Athletic Training major. A partnership with the Newport Aquarium provides a unique collaboration of hands-on learning and research opportunities for students. With an eye toward the institution’s impact on the region, the Thomas More College Success Center was created as a result of the largest gift in the College’s history. As Thomas More College approaches its 100th anniversary in 2021 and enters its 2015-2020 Strategic Plan phase, Armstrong is steadfast in his efforts to advance the institution.
Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, Armstrong holds a Juris Doctor from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law (1989) and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, Minor in Accounting, from Mercyhurst University (1986). Previously, he served as vice president and general counsel of Notre Dame College in South Euclid, Ohio for 10 years where he oversaw divisions of the college that set records in enrollment and fundraising. His background in higher education administration at Notre Dame College, Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pa. and Thiel College in Greenville, Pa. includes a span of experience in development, student life, recruitment, higher education law and policy, and athletics.
As a senior at Mercyhurst University, Armstrong received the Carpe Diem Award, which is the highest award given to a graduating senior. He is a member of three Halls of Fame: the Football Hall of Fame and Athletic Hall of Fame at Mercyhurst University, and the Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame at St. Peter Chanel High School. In 2015, he was awarded Mercyhurst University's Distinguished Alumni award for Outstanding Service in a Chosen Field.
