The Education Department at Thomas More College is proud to present a program to prepare candidates who have a baccalaureate degree and who have completed the content requirements for a certification area as defined by the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board (EPSB).

Master of Arts in Teaching Program

Choose Your Track

Track I - Alternative Certification: Temporary Provisional Certificate Holders
This track is designed for those currently teaching with a Temporary Provisional Certificate, who hold a Bachelor's Degree with a certifiable major.

Track II - Traditional Program: Teacher Certification for Bachelor's Degree Holders
This track is for those with certifiable majors in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Social Studies, or English, who want to acquire their teacher certification while maintaining their current job or who may not be employed. Candidates who are in track II must participate in a 15-week supervised teaching experience during their final semester. This is a non-paid teaching experience which requires full participation in the supervised teaching experience from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday during this period. Candidates must understand that this 7:30 am to 4:30 pm commitment means that they cannot have fulltime employment during this period.

Application Process

Persons in either Track I or Track II can choose:

  • Middle Grade(Gr. 5-9) Science, Social Studies, English, and Mathematics
  • Secondary (Gr. 8-12) Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English, History, Speech Communications, and Mathematics
  • Art, Grades P-12
  • Business and Marketing, Grades 5-12
  • Theater, Grades P-12
  • Spanish, P-12 (Fall 2012)

To apply for the MAT program, you must present all official college transcripts with a GPA of 2.75 or better overall, and 2.75 in your content area. In addition, you must understand the significance of personal characteristics, display a professional disposition, perform well in a personal interview, and meet other admissions requirements.
